You bought a reserved seat on a Shinkansen or limited express train, but your plans changed and you want to take a train an hour later.
That does not necessarily mean you are stuck with the original reservation. Many JR tickets can be changed before departure if the conditions are met.
For ordinary JR tickets, you can generally make one change to the same type of ticket before you start using it, without paying a change fee. If the new ticket costs more, you pay the difference. If it costs less, the difference is refunded.
For reserved seats, one point is especially important: make the change before your original train departs.
If plans change, Japanese travelers will usually check whether the reservation can still be changed rather than assume they must take the original train. Before departure, there may still be time to fix it.
However, not every ticket follows the same rules.
Some online services, such as SmartEX, offer tickets that can be changed multiple times as long as certain conditions are met. On the other hand, early-booking discounts, travel packages, and other special tickets may have stricter rules. Some cannot be changed at all, while others can only be changed within certain dates or to certain trains.
So it is not safe to assume that “all JR tickets can be changed once.” The rules depend on whether you have a regular ticket, an online reservation, or a discounted or special product.
Missing the train is also different from changing the reservation before departure. Whether you can use a later train depends on the train and the type of ticket you bought.
And if you are not sure what kind of ticket you have or whether it can be changed, you do not need to figure out every rule by yourself.
Show your ticket or reservation to a station employee near the ticket office or ticket gates and say that you want to change your train. They can tell you what is possible and where to complete the change.
The important thing is not to assume, “I already bought it, so it is too late.”
Check your reservation as soon as your plans change. If the rules are confusing, ask a station employee. You do not need to understand the entire JR ticket system before asking for help.
