In Japan’s public school system, preparation for junior high does not begin after elementary school graduation. Because students usually attend the public junior high school for their local school district, information begins arriving while they are still in sixth grade, and families gradually prepare for April. Rather than searching for a new school from scratch and arranging everything themselves, children move toward junior high while they are still attending elementary school.
As enrollment approaches, schools provide information about uniforms, gym clothes, supplies, and other items students will need. Families prepare these in their own way, and not everything has to be bought new. Some students use hand-me-downs from older siblings or receive items from people they know. Some schools also offer school visits, trial lessons, or introductions to club activities, although how much is done before enrollment varies considerably from school to school.
What happens to existing friendships also depends on the area. In some places, most children from one elementary school move on to the same junior high, so the faces around them do not change very much. In other areas, several elementary schools feed into one junior high, meaning students keep some old friends while also meeting many new classmates. Students who enter a private junior high are more likely to come from a wider range of areas, so they may not continue school life with the same friends they had in elementary school.
Preparation also takes place in ways that children and parents may not see directly. Elementary schools pass relevant information on to junior high schools, including how a child is doing academically, health-related matters, and whether the student may need extra help or consideration at school. Since children are entering adolescence at this age, junior high schools do not simply wait until April and meet every student with no prior information at all. How detailed this handover is, however, differs from school to school.
So in Japan’s public school system, the transition does not suddenly begin when April arrives. Uniforms and supplies are prepared in advance, some friendships continue, and schools pass along information that may help the transition. By the time elementary school ends, the move into junior high has already been underway for some time.
