If you have an international driving permit that is valid in Japan, you can generally drive for up to one year.
However, this does not mean that everyone automatically gets a full year from the day they arrive in Japan.
There are two time limits to check. One is one year from the date the international driving permit was issued. The other is one year from the date you entered Japan. You can drive only while both periods are still valid, so your right to drive ends when the earlier of the two deadlines arrives.
For example, if you obtain an international driving permit and come to Japan three months later, you do not get another full year after arrival. Three months of the permit’s one-year period have already passed, so you would have about nine months remaining.
Another important point is that not every international driving permit can be used in Japan. Japan recognizes permits issued in accordance with the Geneva Convention by eligible countries and regions that follow the required format.
There is also a special issue for people who are registered as residents in Japan. You cannot simply leave Japan for a short time, obtain a new international driving permit overseas, return, and assume that a new one-year driving period has begun.
If a person recorded in Japan’s Basic Resident Register leaves the country and returns in less than three months, that re-entry does not become a new starting point for the driving period. Obtaining a new international driving permit during that short stay abroad does not, by itself, reset the time limit in Japan.
That does not necessarily mean the person is unable to drive after returning. If the original one-year period from the previous entry into Japan has not yet expired, and the international driving permit being used is still within one year of its issue date and otherwise valid, driving may still be permitted. To establish a new entry date as the starting point, a resident generally needs to have remained outside Japan for at least three months before re-entering.
So simply remembering that “an international driving permit is valid for one year” can be misleading.
You need to check whether your permit is a type recognized in Japan, when it was issued, when you entered Japan, and, if you are registered as a resident, whether a recent departure and re-entry affects the calculation.
The “one year” is not automatically a full year granted from the day everyone arrives in Japan. Check the permit’s issue date, your entry date, and, where relevant, the three-month rule to determine how long you can legally drive.
