In Japan, the standard etiquette is to take a gift out of its shopping bag before handing it to someone.
The bag is mainly there to carry the item and protect it from dirt or damage. So if you have been invited into someone’s home and have time to present the gift properly, it is considered polite to remove it from the bag and hand it over with the front facing the recipient.
In everyday life, however, people are not always so strict about this.
A bag helps keep the gift clean, and it also makes it easier for the recipient to carry home. In places such as an office or when meeting someone away from home, it may actually be more practical to hand over the gift in the bag. In that case, it is natural to add a brief comment such as, “Please excuse me for giving it to you in the bag.” Holding the bag carefully rather than simply dangling it from one hand also gives a more considerate impression.
The shopping bag itself can sometimes become part of the impression the gift makes.
For example, if it comes from a well-known department store or famous shop, the recipient may immediately recognize where it was bought. The bag can suggest that the giver made the effort to go there and choose something from that particular store.
This is not a formal rule of Japanese etiquette. It is simply one way some people may see it. Still, the bag can sometimes add to the overall impression of the gift rather than being treated as something completely separate from it.
And if the recipient needs to carry the gift somewhere afterward, taking it out only to put it straight back into the same bag can feel unnecessary.
So, the standard etiquette is to remove the gift from the shopping bag before presenting it, but giving it in the bag is not automatically rude.
The situation matters too. Treating the gift carefully and making it easy for the other person to receive and carry can be just as important as following the formal rule.
