In Japan, you do not always need to reserve a taxi in advance just because you are traveling early in the morning.
In a large city such as Tokyo, you may be able to find a taxi without a reservation if you are leaving from a major station or a taxi stand.
However, if you absolutely cannot afford to be late — for example, when going to the airport or catching an early train — it is safer to arrange or confirm a taxi in advance.
The reason is simple: there may not be a taxi available near you at that time.
Even in a city, if you want a taxi to pick you up from your home early in the morning, there may not be an empty vehicle nearby. And even in areas covered by taxi apps, a car is not guaranteed to be available whenever you need one.
In rural areas, this can be an even bigger issue.
Some areas rely mainly on small taxi companies or individual operators. They may not be operating early in the morning, or they may simply have no driver or vehicle available at that time.
Taxi companies are staffed by people, after all. The fact that a taxi company exists does not mean that someone can necessarily pick you up at 5:00 a.m.
Reservation methods vary by company. Some accept bookings by phone, while others allow you to choose a pickup time through an app.
However, taxi apps do not work the same way everywhere in Japan. Coverage areas and booking systems vary, and even a reservation may not always guarantee that a vehicle will actually be dispatched.
It is also a good idea to arrange things in advance if you have several passengers, a lot of luggage, or need a larger vehicle.
On the other hand, if you are leaving from a major station or airport in a large city where taxis are usually waiting, you may be able to travel without booking ahead.
The key question is not simply whether your trip is early in the morning, but how much trouble you would be in if you could not find a taxi right away.
If you absolutely need to leave on time, arrange or confirm your ride in advance. This is especially important in rural or suburban areas, where it is better not to assume that a taxi will simply be available when you need one.
