In Japan, some people are reluctant to buy triangular plots of land for a home. In traditional ideas about house layout and feng shui, a square or rectangular plot is often seen as stable, while a sharply pointed or irregular shape may be viewed less favorably.
But superstition is not the only reason people avoid triangular plots. The more immediate concern is often practical: they simply look harder to build on. A rectangular lot makes it relatively easy to arrange a house, parking space, and garden. On a triangular lot, the narrow corners can be difficult to use, and the shape may limit the orientation or floor plan of the house. Even before thinking about luck, some people look at the land and think it would be troublesome to live on.
Then, if someone adds, “Triangular plots are considered bad in house fortune too,” the hesitation can grow. Even people who do not normally care much about such beliefs may become less interested. Land is not something most people buy casually just because it is cheap. It can mean spending a large amount of money, taking out a mortgage, and living there for many years. If a plot already feels slightly wrong, there may be little reason to choose it when other options exist.
So the feeling is usually not, “This land is cursed, and nobody should live here.” It is more that the practical disadvantages are already there, and the unlucky image gets added on top. Together, they make the plot easier to reject.
This does not necessarily extend to other people’s homes. Someone may personally refuse to buy a triangular plot but feel nothing at all when another family lives on one. They are unlikely to look at the house and assume that something bad will happen. “I would not choose it myself, but what someone else does is their business” is a fairly natural distance to keep.
Triangular plots are therefore not avoided only because of an old superstition. Concerns about how difficult the land may be to use often come first, and the negative image from house fortune adds another reason to hesitate. That is why even someone who does not strongly believe in such ideas may still decide that a triangular plot is not worth choosing.
